Tackling Osteoarthritis: Effective Prevention Strategies

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?

Osteoarthritis is a condition that causes joints to gradually become more painful and stiff. Historically, it is known as a “wear and tear” condition associated with ageing.

In osteoarthritis, the coating of smooth tissue, called cartilage, covering the bones starts to become thinner meaning the joint doesn’t move as smoothly as normal.

The body starts to repair itself but by doing this it can change the joint causing pain, swelling and difficulty moving.

Osteoarthritis is very common but usually affects joints bearing our weight or being used a lot such as knees, hips, and hands.

HOW TO PREVENT OSTEOARTHRITIS?

There are lots of things we can do to treat osteoarthritis but it is always best to prevent it in the first place.

            • Keep a healthy weight – excess weight puts additional stress on weight-bearing joints such as knees and hips.
            • Regularly exercise – weight training can help build up muscles around the joint supporting overall joint health. Low-impact exercise like swimming and cycling also contribute to preventing osteoarthritis and help keep your weight down!
            • Nutrition to prevent osteoarthritis – a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential. Foods such as fatty fish (high in omega-3), flaxseeds, fruits and vegetables help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. Make sure to keep your overall sugar and alcohol intake down as well!
            • Stop Smoking! – smoking has been linked to the breakdown of cartilage in joints, directly contributing to the development of OA.

Glucosamine Supplementation
Glucosamine is a natural compound found in healthy cartilage. Suggestions have been made that they help protect the cells that maintain cartilage and prevent degradation in osteoarthritis.

However, recent evidence is mixed as to its benefit, some large studies have shown positive findings while others have not. However, there has been no evidence that it causes any harm.

If you do want to try glucosamine, make sure to check with your doctor and pharmacist as it can interact with other medications.
