SHIN SPLINTS: What they are and what we can do.
Shin splints, also known as medial tibial stress syndrome, are a common but misunderstood condition affecting athletes and anybody engaged in high-impact activities. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the causes, symptoms, preventive measures, and effective treatments for shin splints
WHAT ARE SHIN SPLINTS?
Shin splints are the name given for pain in the shin bones on the front of the lower legs usually caused by exercise. It is commonly seen in people who do a lot of running or other activities involving high impact through the lower limbs.
It is believed that shin splints are caused by inflammation surrounding the membrane (periosteum) of the shin bone (tibia).
SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS OF SHIN SPLINTS
- Patients will have diffuse pain along the middle of the tibial bone (the shin bone on the inside of the lower leg).
- Pain will begin after starting exercise and may improve with rest or whilst exercising.
- Later on, pain may become constant even at rest.
Shin splints are usually diagnosed clinically but x-rays may be needed to rule out stress fractures.
RISK FACTORS FOR SHIN SPLINTS
- Running without enough shock absorption eg. improper running shoes on hard surfaces.
- Running large volumes or sudden increase in training intensity.
- Being overweight.
- Previous history of shin splints.
