Managing back pain: at home and in the clinic

Back pain, in particular lower back pain, is extremely common and usually benign but can be caused by serious medical conditions.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR?

Commonly back pain is caused by pulled muscles, but it is important to be aware of some signs and symptoms (red flags) that there is a more serious cause of the pain:

– Severe pain or sudden onset.

– Numbness or weakness in legs, feet or buttocks.

– Loss of bowel or bladder control

– Fevers

– Unexplained weight loss

We recommend that you seek a healthcare professional immediately if you have any of these symptoms with back pain.

MANAGING BACK PAIN AT HOME

            • Continue as much movement as possible – gentle activities like walking and stretching are very helpful!
            • Hot and cold therapy – apply heat packs or cold compresses to the affected area
            • Over-the-counter painkillers – Ibuprofen is recommended to help manage inflammation.
            • Maintain a healthy posture – whether walking or sitting, ergonomic chairs or support pillows might help.
            • Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy diet – this can support the health of your spinal discs.
