WHAT IT IS
The inflammation of the prepatellar bursa, a fluid-filled sac in front of your kneecap, causing pain, swelling, redness, and tenderness, often from repetitive kneeling or direct impact, common in jobs like housekeeping or carpet laying.
SYMPTOMS
- Knee pain
- Inflammation and swelling over the front of the knee
- The knee may feel warm and tender
CAUSE
Primarily from prolonged kneeling or repetitive pressure on the knees, common in jobs like carpet fitting, gardening, or housekeeping, but also from direct trauma (blows, falls) or infections entering a break in the skin, with underlying conditions like arthritis or gout increasing risk.
TREATMENT
Conservative treatment is recommended for mild cases:
- Ice packs
- Compression Bandages
- Physiotherapy, which includes stretching and strengthening the muscles and improving the range of movement.
- Avoiding aggravating factors, such as strenuous exercise.
- Over the counter medication, like paracetamol and ibuprofen. (It is important to speak to your GP or a Healthcare Professional before any medication is taken.)
Treatment for severe cases:
Treatment for severe cases may include aspirating the bursa and then injecting the area with steroid under ultrasound guidance. If the bursa has become infected, you will also be prescribed a course of antibiotics.
