Baker cyst aspiration
WHAT IS A BAKER’S CYST?
A baker’s cyst is a fluid filled cyst that causes swelling and a feeling of tightness behind the knee. A baker’s cyst is usually caused by arthritis, cartilage tears or previous trauma.
Symptoms include:
- Swelling behind the knee
- Knee pain
- Inability to fully flex the knee
- Tightness
Those who spend prolonged periods on their knees, those with arthritis and people aged between 50-70 are more at risk of being diagnosed with a baker’s cyst.
HOW DO WE DIAGNOSE A BAKER’S CYST?
Clinicians will usually ask a series of questions, followed by an examination of the finger or thumb. A clinician may also recommend having an X-Ray to rule out any bony problems in the knee. An ultrasound scan or an MRI may be recommended if the clinician suspects any cartilage tears.
HOW DO WE TREAT A BAKER’S CYST?
Conservative treatment is recommended for mild cases:
- Ice packs
- Compression Bandages
- Physiotherapy, which includes stretching and strengthening the muscles and improving the range of movement.
- Avoiding aggravating factors, such as strenuous exercise.
- Over the counter medication, like paracetamol and ibuprofen. (It is important to speak to your GP or a Healthcare Professional before any medication is taken.)
