Advanced Musculoskeletal
Interventions:
Hydrodilatation

£850 – £1,000

Krida Harley Street offers a specialist treatment for Frozen Shoulder, known as Ultrasound Guided Hydrodilatation, also known as Hydrodistention. The aim of Hydrodilatation is to alleviate pain and restore the range of movement within the shoulder joint.

Following your initial consultation, your clinician will mark and sterilise the skin and inject local anaesthetic into the skin. Hydrodilatation involves gently injecting a large volume of sterile fluid into the shoulder joint, using ultrasound guidance, to expand and stretch the shoulder joint capsule. This may cause a feeling of tightness, increased pressure or heaviness within the shoulder or down the arm.

If your symptoms are not relieved by physiotherapy or injection methods, surgical treatments may be recommended.

Many of our procedures can be diagnosed and performed in one session. In order to explain your specific condition, please book an initial free consultation and we will discuss your options with you on the phone.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Hydrodilatation is a relatively safe procedure if performed by a trained musculoskeletal professional. However:

  • There is a small risk of infection (approximately 1 in 20,000 patients). If you experience symptoms such as unexpected pain, warmth or redness around the injected area or unexplained fever or flu-like symptoms you should immediately consult your GP or attend A&E. Please explain that you have recently had Hydrodilatation, as an infection could potentially be serious.
  • There is a risk that the procedure may not work (about 30% of patients)
  • Please inform the clinician if you are taking any anticoagulants, including Warfarin.
  • There is a small risk of bleeding.
  • You may experience discomfort for 24 hours following the procedure, although this is rare.
Uncommon and temporary side effects of corticosteroids
  • Slight increase in blood sugar levels in diabetic patients
  • Facial flushing
  • Changes to menstruation cycle
Post Procedure
  • It can take several days for the steroid to fully begin to work.
  • We advise that you organise for a close friend or family member to accompany you to your appointment and drive you home.
  • Occasionally, patients feel lightheaded following the procedure. Therefore, we would advise you to remain in the clinic for at least 30 minutes.
  • We also advise to avoid strenuous exercise for 3-5 days following the procedure. Regular stretches advised by your physiotherapist are, however, encouraged 24 hours following the procedure.
  • We advise booking an appointment to see a physiotherapist 3-5 days following the procedure.
