WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE FIRST METATARSOPHALANGEAL JOINT?

Osteoarthritis of the First Metatarsophalangeal joint refers to the gradual wearing of the articular cartilage, which causes pain and stiffness as the joint surface degenerates.

Symptoms include pain in the big toe, a dull aching, intermittent flare ups of pain usually felt around the big toe, decreased range of movement and a crunching sensation when you move the big toe, known as crepitus. Osteoarthritis may make daily activities challenging, like walking. The pain and loss of movement can ultimately lead to muscle weakness and atrophy. Risk factors for osteoarthritis include age, genetics, sex, weight, joint infection, history of big toe dislocation and previous big toe injuries.

HOW DO WE DIAGNOSE OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE FIRST METATARSOPHALANGEAL JOINT?

Clinicians will usually ask a series of questions, followed by an examination of the big toe. If necessary, they will recommend appropriate imaging, such as an ultrasound scan, X-Ray or MRI scan.

HOW DO WE DIAGNOSE OSTEOARTHRITIS OF THE FIRST METATARSOPHALANGEAL JOINT?

          • Activity modification
          • Rest
          • Physiotherapy , which includes stretching and strengthening the muscles and improving the range of movement.

              • Ultrasound Guided PRP Injections help reduce pain and inflammation and promote rehabilitation.

WE PROVIDE ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS AND A WIDE RANGE OF ULTRASOUND GUIDED INJECTION PROCEDURES TO TREAT JOINT PAIN AND SPORTS INJURIES.
