Bursitis / Housemaid’s Knee

WHAT IS BURSITIS

A Bursa is a fluid filled sac that provides cushioning to reduce friction and irritation between the muscles, tendons and bones. Bursitis occurs when any bursa in your knee becomes inflamed due to overuse and strenuous activities, direct load to the knee or a bacterial infection of the bursa.

SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

          • Knee pain
          • Inflammation and swelling over the front of the knee
          • The knee may feel warm and tender

Those who are on their knees for prolonged periods, partake in regular sporting activities, such as running and volleyball are more at risk of bursitis in the knee. Likewise, obesity and arthritis can be risk factors.

HOW DO WE DIAGNOSE BURSITIS?

Clinicians will usually ask a series of questions, followed by an examination of the knee. If necessary, they will recommend appropriate imaging, such as an ultrasound scan, X-Ray or MRI scan.

How do we treat Bursitis?

MILD CASES
Conservative treatment is recommended for mild cases:

  • Ice packs
  • Compression Bandages
  • Physiotherapy, which includes stretching and strengthening the muscles and improving the range of movement.
  • Avoiding aggravating factors, such as strenuous exercise.
  • Over the counter medication, like paracetamol and ibuprofen. (It is important to speak to your GP or a Healthcare Professional before any medication is taken.)
SEVERE CASES
Treatment for severe cases may include aspirating the bursa and then injecting the area with steroid under ultrasound guidance. If the bursa has become infected, you will also be prescribed a course of antibiotics.

WE PROVIDE ADVANCED DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENTS AND A WIDE RANGE OF ULTRASOUND GUIDED INJECTION PROCEDURES TO TREAT JOINT PAIN AND SPORTS INJURIES.
